In the practice of what we are used to refer to as folk and traditional music, terms such as
makam and the traditional scales, are used as codes of communication with the ultimate goal of the
the ability to improvise -taximi-.
In this workshop we are going to work with these codes, the relationship between
them, and their connection with the musical act of pre-war urban folk music, widely
known as pre-war rebetiko.
The workshop is addressed to all musicians who study folk and traditional instruments,
but also to those who have a general interest in rebetiko and oriental music
