In this workshop, interesting technical and expressive issues related to the canon will be examined. Focusing on the musical practice of folk and traditional space, concepts such as maqams and folkways as keys to communication will be examined. The canon will form the core of the analysis, focusing on its technique and how it contributes to the development of performance skills and improvisation.

Bio
Ilias Mantikos was born in April 1989 in Rhodes. At the age of 12, he started canon lessons with Pantelis Anastasopoulos as his teacher. Since his high school years, he has been attending seminars by distinguished Greek and Turkish musicians, among them Halil Karaduman, Goksel Baktagir, Ahmet Meter, Markos Skoulios, Nikos Andrikos, Evgenios Voulgaris, etc. At the same time, he takes part in music competitions, winning three (3) first prizes in the school music competitions and one (1) first prize in the pan-Hellenic municipal song and music competition in Pyrgos Ilias. Also since 2007 he holds a diploma in Byzantine music.
He is a graduate of the Department of Folk and Traditional Music in Arta where he studied alongside Apostolis Tsardakas.
He has participated in musical groups such as “aralik ensemble”, “Canto Mediterraneo”, “Atropon ensemble” etc. Schemes where each of them discussed different topics.
From 2005 until today, he has to his credit, a series of concerts both inside and outside the borders. Since 2008, he has collaborated, either in concerts or on record, with several masters of the artistic and traditional music scene such as Panagiotis Lalezas, Solon Lekas, Christos Tzitzimikas, Michalis Alefantinos, Alexis Parcharidis, Miltos Paschalidis, Dimitris Yfantis, Dimitris Bassis, Nadia Karagianni, Maria Sultatou, Nesibe Özgül Turgay et al.
Today, he lives in Athens where he is active as a musician in music scenes and other venues.
